Ford India to replace defective parts in Figo, Classic cars

Chennai: Ford India is inspecting specific batches of its Figo and Classic models for problems relating to rear twist beam and power steering hose.

In an official statement, the company said this is a voluntary and pre-emptive field service action starting July 23. All Ford Figo and Ford Classic vehicles manufactured between January 2008 and December 2010, will have the rear twist beam (a type of automobile suspension) inspected, and replaced if found defective, said the statement.

The symptom of a potential crack in the rear twist beam (RTB) is in the form of an abnormal noise from the rear. If a user continues to drive, ignoring the noise, it could lead to the RTB unit breaking, resulting in a "diminished" ride and handling and brake performance, potentially rendering the vehicle inoperable.

All Ford Figo and Ford Classic petrol engine vehicles manufactured from September 2010 till February 2011 will have the power steering hose replaced as a precautionary measure. The issue is the potential for an oil leak to develop in the power steering hose which could result in fumes being emitted from the area causing the leak.

With respect to the RTB issue, 1,11,000 vehicles will be inspected in India. Ford Figo and Ford Classic (previously known as Fiesta), sold from January 2008 till December 2010 will need to be inspected but will not necessarily need part replacements.
