Cars built for the summer
Mini Moke
Alec Issigonis thought there was mileage in selling a Mini-based 'Buckboard' to the British armed forces, but there wasn't, so BMC decided instead to foist it onto a bemused public in 1964. A moke is a type of packhorse donkey and the Mini Moke was marketed as the same: a cheap, basic carry-all with stark, open bodywork. Carnaby Street took a fancy to it, and so has the classic car movement, which keeps Moke values surprisingly high these days.
