Some names tower over the automotive industry like giants. They’ve grown to become vast international corporations and powerful mega brands moulded and nurtured over a century or more for the express purpose of selling cars. It’s easy to forget that many of the car world’s biggest names were men first, men who, by accident or design, left their indelible mark on the motoring world.

With news that Eiji Toyoda, Toyota’s longest serving president and the cousin of founder Kiichiro Toyoda, has passed away aged 100, we’re taking a look back at the men who gave their names to the world’s biggest car brands – and some of the smaller ones as well.
